If you're like me, you're probably still abuzz with Emmy fever after last night's enjoyable telecast. Of course, we faced disappointment in some categories, but in others, we were overjoyed with emotion as if we just won the statuette ourselves!
Take a look at some of the moments that stuck out to me from last night's show, whether for positive or negative reasons.
THE PLEASANT SURPRISES:
- Julie Bowen - The absolutely hilarious Julie Bowen snagged the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series! If you saw my Emmy wishlist, you would see how highly I think of Bowen, but how little hope I had that she would take home Emmy gold. I begged for Justice to be served...and in a miracle I can't explain, it was! Congrats to Julie, and props to the Academy for recognizing her over esteemed favorites Jane Lynch and Betty White.
- Ty Burrell - Following Julie's lead, her ever so quirky on-screen husband, Ty Burrell, took home the statue for Supporting Actor in a Comedy. Overall, this pretty much set the night for me. While I had more hope for Burrell than I did Bowen, I still was incredibly surprised that both emerged victorious. They are so incredibly well deserved and definitely pleasant surprises to say the least!
- The Beauty Pageant Chronicles - At first I thought this was solely Amy Poehler running up on stage acting as if she won the Emmy, and I went nuts! When the other nominees began to join her, I still found it pretty amusing. I know that Amy likes to be different with the nominees she's up against as I recall a few years ago she had them all (excluding Vanessa Williams who was staying in character) sport comical glasses as the names were read off. All the more reason I'm heartbroken she didn't take the gold...again.
- Jane Lynch - I thought Jane Lynch did an outstanding job hosting the event. She provided a great opening number, followed by some comical skits in between, including one where she portrayed the creator of all things Jersey related. Topping that were her hilarious one liners, especially the one involving the cast of Entourage being the reason for her sexual preference to women. Overall, she helped make this years Emmy's one of the more entertaining sets for me.
THE EXPECTED BUT STILL DESERVED:
- Modern Family - Jane Lynch put it best when she dubbed this "The Modern Family Awards". They flat out dominated the entire comedy category, but the thing is, all of the choices were well deserved. Like it or not, the show is hilarious, and everyone who took an award, whether it be due to writing, direction, or acting, definitely put in the work that goes behind winning an Emmy. Props to the show for inserting its place in history as one of the funniest programs on television!
- Julianna Margulies - This was perhaps the award I was most nervous about, even though I had thought Julianna would take it in the end. I had similar feelings last year, and she ended up losing so I was a little mixed this time around. In the end, everything worked out and she rightfully took Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama. Hopefully this can give some much needed buzz to The Good Wife, and help the ratings out because it's one of the most enlightening shows out there.
- Margo Martindale - Talk about down to the wire! I actually finished Justified about an hour before the Emmy's started, and it made Margo Martindale's victory that much sweeter. I was torn between she, Archie Panjabi, and Michelle Forbes, but in the end I'm thrilled that Margo took it home. Her portrayal of Mags Bennet was amazing, and she put it best in her speech when she explained that sometimes things just take time, but it makes you appreciate it even more. Hats off to you Camilla!
- Jim Parsons - I know, I know...In my wishlist I had set Steve Carrell to win for his final season of the Office, but Jim Parsons made for a just as equal celebration. The Big Bang Theory is still running strong as one of the staples of CBS Comedy, and a lot of that is due to Parsons role as Sheldon Cooper. Jim deserves all the awards in the world for such a hilarious character, and even got two cameos in tonight's batch of skits!
THE "DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?!":
- Melissa McCarthy - Now before I get started, let me explain that what I'm about to say is nothing to do with Melissa McCarthy as a performer. I think she's incredibly funny, and very deserving of all the praise she receives...however, Mike & Molly is not my cup of tea. It was one of the few shows I actually stopped watching because I couldn't stand the constant fat joke after fat joke shtick, so I don't know if the Academy awarded this to her based on her role in Bridesmaids, or what. Nonetheless, congrats go out to her and she definitely gave a fantastic speech.
- Charlie Sheen - Where to even begin? This was bad on all sorts of levels. His entire apology/speech sounded incredibly forced and you could tell he didn't even want to be there. I read that some of the stars refused to applaud him as he made his entrance to the stage, and rightfully so. I don't understand why his presence was needed, or what purpose it served, but overall this was just not good.
