EMMY'S 2011: Who Would I Choose to Win
It's the most wonderful time of the year. No...not Christmas, but The Emmy's!
Emulating Sunday night from the Nokia Theatre in sunny Los Angeles, this FOX hosted awards show will honor the 2010-2011 year in television. There's sure to be just as much triumph as there is heartbreak once the statues go out tomorrow, but hopefully not much of the latter. Make it no secret that we all have our favorites heading into the show, but how will the judging panel respond to a ballot full of worthy candidates?
Here at TVRunsMyLife, the judging is in my hands, as I take a look at the top categories, and choose who I feel should emerge victorious.
Without any further ado...
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Jane Lynch (Glee)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
Betty White (Hot in Cleveland)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
- I'm most certain I've chosen someone who will not take the Emmy tomorrow night, what with favorites, Jane Lynch & Betty White in the running. Julie Bowen has been often overlooked, and is someone I find extremely underrated for her performance as Claire Dunphy on Modern Family. She seems to fit the 'Always a bridesmaid, never a bride' shtick, in that she can never seem to topple the White/Lynch duo no matter how effortless her acting may be. Nonetheless, I am definitely Team Bowen heading into the show...now let's pray for a miracle to strike and justice to be served!
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
Ty Burrell (Modern Family)
Chris Colfer (Glee)
Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Ed O'Neill (Modern Family)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
- Talk about category domination...If someone from Modern Family doesn't end up taking the win, I'll be heavily stunned. I'm glad to see Ed O'Neill finally snag a nomination after getting shunned for his work as Al Bundy on Married with Children, and I could definitely see him taking it this year...but Ty Burrell is the choice I'm going for. He brought me to laughter the most last season, notably the episode where he turned the family minivan into a rolling misconstrued advertisement. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing anyone take the emmy here, but if we're going on laughs, Ty Burrell certainly brings them by the barrel.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series:
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Michelle Forbes (The Killing)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire)
Margo Martindale (Justified)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
-It takes A LOT for me to not select either Michelle Forbes or Archie Panjabi for this one, but Margo Martindale is that good in her role as Mags Bennett on Justified. I am just nearing completion of the current season, but I already feel I have seen enough to justify this decision. The jaw dropping moment when she smashes Cooper's hand with a hammer will forever remain one of the most shocking moments for me personally, and I truly hope that at least one of the three mentioned in this paragraph (no disrespect to the other trio of ladies nominated) is rewarded for their hard work.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series:
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)
Josh Charles (The Good Wife)
Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Walton Goggins (Justified)
John Slattery (Mad Men)
- Alan Cumming has done a fantastic job this year as Eli Gold on The Good Wife. Perhaps one of my favorite storylines thus far has been his relationship to Natalie Flores, seeming to want to take things one step further with her, but always shying back for the sake of professionalism. I am definitely hoping he takes the gold statuette this weekend.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Tina Fey (30 Rock)
Laura Linney (The Big C)
Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly)
Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope)
Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
- No contest here for sure. Amy Poehler has made Leslie Knope into someone you just can't stop watching. She deserved the gold last year, much like Julianna Margulies, in my opinion, however, let's hope this year can finally bring both she and the show the success it so rightfully deserves. Let's go Parks and Rec!
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series:
Alex Baldwin (30 Rock)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Louis C.K. (Louie)
Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory)
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
- First off, no disrespect to Matt Leblanc, but a nomination for playing...yourself? Really? Now that that's out of the way...I'm very pleased to see both Johnny Galecki & Jim Parsons nominated this year, even though I feel like Parsons is definitely the favorite amongst the two. I could, however, see the emmy going to Steve Carell for his final season on the Office, and to be frank, that's exactly what I would like to happen as well.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
Kathy Bates (Harry's Law)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Mirielle Enos (The Killing)
Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU)
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
- This one is fairly easy for me to decide, although to others maybe not so much. I've been drawn to Julianna Margulies' performance as Alicia Florrick since season one, and was pretty surprised when she didn't snag emmy gold last year. The other nominees have each given great performances, but I think it's time Julianna get her due for The Good Wife.
Oustanding Leading Actor in a Drama Series:
Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Hugh Laurie (House)
Timothy Olyphant (Justified)
- Hmm, this one's a tough one. I could see it going to Steve Buscemi due to how dominant Boardwalk Empire has been throughout the past year in terms of awards, but part of me thrives for Michael C. Hall to get the Emmy he so royally deserved for his performance in season four of Dexter. Justified has also become my latest TV Obsession, and I do enjoy Mad Men as well. Ahhh, I can't stray away from my loyal Dexter following...Michael C. Hall for the victory!
Outstanding Reality-Competition Program:
So You Think You Can Dance
The Amazing Race
Project Runway
American Idol
Dancing with the Stars
Top Chef
- Regrettably, my favorite reality competitions, Big Brother & Survivor, are not possible for victory. American Idol did seem to improve with the new judging panel, but it's momentum was quickly overtaken by newcomer "The Voice". This would normally be easy to predict, being the Amazing Race dominated the category for so long, however, last year Top Chef took home the gold. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that The Amazing Race reclaims it's position as the cream of the crop.
Outstanding Comedy Series:
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks and Recreation
- Hands down, without a shadow of a doubt does Parks and Recreation deserve this Emmy. They have had a phenomenal third season, to which hopefully the voters will recognize after last year's defeat. It's hard to believe what we see before us today is the same program from it's freshman six episode run, but if you really want to see a show that capitalized on it's potential, check out Parks and Recreation.
Outstanding Drama Series:
Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men
- Personally, Dexter is my favorite program that airs today, but surprisingly, I have to give this one to The Good Wife. A brilliant season filled with twists and turns, highs and lows; From Alicia discovering her near rekindled marriage was flawed by the one person she thought she could trust...all the way to Will & Diane outsmarting Bond and maintaining the firm to themselves, this season has been true perfection.
There you have it! My choices have been selected, but how many will match the predictions I chose? Better yet, what does your emmy ballot look like?
